March 26th

86/365:
drizzly rain clouds met us out on our morning walk…

fitting, since today we would be goodbying… :( just sayin…

but what a great last day we did have
the sun came out to play…
& dad (?) was ready for another shopping adventure…

a lil afternoon exploration was in order…
to the Fashion District we went…
it’s pretty crazy… totally ghetto… & I it!

On most days, the streets are teeming with a great variety of bargain-crazy shoppers, but today the crowd was pleasantly mild.  It was a beautiful day outside; the weather was divine—not too hot, not too cold.  I am luving spring this year… just kicking it in shorts and a hoodie, my favorite way to roll.

Though dad appeared to be over his crazy “2 pairs of shoes on the same day shopping spree,” mom and I did not leave empty handed…
He, however, did foot-the-bill for our new arm candy…

We detoured slightly off the beaten path, in search of our second lunch at the infamous In N Out burger… yes, twice in 5 days, we know… blessed! (that is what you were thinking right?)!

Last stop before LAX was dad’s doctor.
And since I am writing this post weeks later, I can tell you with much joy that his tests came back with positive feedback.  PTL!!!

March 25th

85/365:
With precious baby Harper just down for her afternoon nap, & dad (?) wanting to visit Cabazon, we left Uncle Matt behind to babysit & simultaneously finish his nerd-work on the laptop that would be going back to Brett…

Dad, mom, sister & I out for a shopping day, in the rain, that we rather enjoyed…
10 minutes from home I received a picture message to my phone; apparently, she was awake…

Yes, you are correct, he had been babysitting for all of ten minutes before using his ipad to entertain her… :/…sigh….

We shopped and shopped, grabbed a coffee… & returned home four hours later…
Greeted at the door by Uncle Matt, insisting that we “ssshhhhh!!!!” because,
“I just got her to sleep.”  We give him a raised eyebrow or two, but didn’t utter a peep.

Later that evening…
after downing bowls of death-by-chocolate goodness,
Megan decides to show Matt a video.
Oh the phenomena that is YouTube…
Oh the silly things that have resulted because of it.
like tonight.
Have you ever tried to crack an egg by crushing it in the palm of your hand?

No?
Why would you ever want to spend time doing that?
Good point.

Only YouTube would give time and encouragement to such mindless pursuits…
Of course, Matt had to give it a go.
He did, to his credit, try this over the sink.
At first it did not appear that there would be success…
I do not care about such things and went back to playing with Harper.
Till I heard mom gasp…
The look on Matt’s face was priceless…
Egg went everywhere… I mean everywhere…
Splashing ooey lines of goo all over the sink, counter, cabinets, fridge, floor…
Egg catapulted everywhere…
There was, in fact, a trail of egg across the entire living room…
& one husband left standing there, in front of the sink, like a deer in headlights…
& thus…
After giving him more raise eyebrows…
I decided to join him…
& give it a go myself…

We finished out the day with blankets and popcorn and soda-pops… all snuggled down in front of a movie that drifted late into the night.

March 24th

84/365:
We were on quite the party train this week… :)
& today was our belated birthday surprise in honor of my parents—seeing as both their birthdays came round earlier this March…

All aboard… for a whale watching extravaganza in San Diego…

The dark clouds that had covered the San Diego skyline that morning were now long-gone… swapped out for a brilliant, sunshiny day :)

Does it get any better than sitting aboard... gulping down the fresh sea breezes and sipping on a cup of piping hot coffee?

Not more than five minutes out, we oohhed and aahhed over the playful antics and fantastic acrobatics of nearby spinner dolphins…

Here she is, rockin her first boat ride…

Luving the sunshine on our skin...

Searching the waters for glimpses of those uninhibited, free whales swaying round out in the wild…
Chugging out farther still, till the choppy sea was reduced to glass…

Spotted… :)

♥ my little sister as a mom; she does the mommy thing quite well... & with her whole heart...

As our tour ended and the ship parked itself back at the marina, the day had turned considerably cooler and we were hungry for dinner.

Matt was in charge of picking our birthday dinner eatery…
&, seeing as my dad luvs a good BBQ, Matt opted to try out a new BBQ restaurant in SD…
It’s a good thing we were hungry & eager for a plateful of warm food to put in our bellies…
because…
this evenings BBQ was, indisputably, the worst BBQ I have ever eaten…

Oh, we did eat it…

& then, supportively smiled & ate some more…
because we knew Matt was only trying to be thoughtful…
& we didn’t want him to feel too bad…
but halfway into the meal, he said it best himself…
“worst BBQ ever”
one for the "it's the thought that counts..."

March 23rd

83/365:
Profuse layers of opaque clouds obscured sunup…
but mom and I quite enjoyed it—this grey morning—with each other…
hiking neighboring streets together…
wispy overhead clouds yielding themselves to us like an immense blanket—eagerly trapping in the earth’s warmth…
walks with mom… :) good times

The afternoon left me smiling… as it was curious to watch, for the very first time in my life, dad on a shopping spree
Indeed!  He bought himself 2 pairs of shoes! Plus 3 for mom!  All at the same time!  All on the same trip!!!
Unheard of.
Not that he bought a pair of sneakers on sale, for that is familiar, but that he purchased for himself 2 pairs—that, my friends, I have never seen him do before...  A shopping spree I tell you!
We’re not quite sure what is happening to him in his old age… ???

I must also add, that over the next three days, he must’ve asked me on three different occasions if I liked his new shoes.
So yes, this is me taking a picture of his shoes… or at least of one pair of his new shoes ;) because he did, in fact, purchase for himself, an unprecedented 2 new pairs of tennies.

later that evening, back at the house,
with dinner muchly underway…
I sat, as sister began to work her mad-awesome stylist skills on my tresses…
our dinner party tonight was a go;
we were all-set…
ready to celebrate Chris’s birthday, together with friends…
fiesta soup and shredded chicken tacos on the menu.

& then…
on a whim…

we determined that we had made an over-abundance of chicken for the tacos…
& that we should, perhaps, add some shredded chicken to the soup….
and so, mom poured a couple cups of chicken into the soup…
I haphazardly supervised from our make-shift salon chair…

then, unable to decide
if she should add a bit more chicken to the soup…
or leave it as is; not wanting to run out of chicken for the tacos…
mom requested some input on this very important chicken decision…
and so…
with me unable to move, & sister coloring my hair…
with the best of intentions, mom carefully walks crockpot over to me…

but…

before I can even look down…
before I ever see how much chicken is still contained in the crock-pot…
the crockpot slipped her grasp and crashed down into a thousand pieces…

in exactly twenty minutes, 11 hungry people would be here for Chris’s birthday dinner…
so there I sat, with hundreds of foils in my hair…
contemplating that I was still very much in need of a shower…
& a “clean-up on aisle four” that must be started/finished before dinner…
acutely aware that my 20 minute countdown had already begun...
& with dinner in a crumble on the floor…

me, seven years ago, would have freaked the freak out…
(if you didn’t know me then, consider yourself fortunate…
if you did, give Matt a big hug)…
slip… bam… crack… crumble…
silence hung in the air…

neither Megan nor mom moved.
not
one
millimeter.
no, they very much froze.
a long five seconds of utter and complete silence hung in the air…
I’ve mellowed out a lot my friends…
A lot.
But, would this be it? Would Danielle break down & revert to rampage…

pppssshhh… details people, details…

my feeble laughter broke the silence…
followed by an epidemic of laughter from all three of us…
mom, sister & I staring after dinner…
now a jumbled pile of chicken and glass on the floor…

I did consider trying to save it…
wash the chicken & strain the glass out perhaps?
& if it weren’t for that pesky younger sister...
divulging horror stories about glass ripping esophagus’s…
I just may have succeeded…
but she was right…
(eeerrrmmm…yes, I did just admit she was right…)

we sent the boys back to the store…
they brought back 9lbs of ground beef… ?!?
best part?  unknownst to me, Chris prefers ground beef…
yes, just like I planned ;)

It was a lively Happy Birthday dinner around the table, to be sure.
& Jean’s delicious German chocolate cake to follow...

& candles and presents

& smiles and laughter

March 22nd

82/365:
I ♥ them.
How I love these two!

How I ♥ breathing in the salty sea-breezes with them…

How I ♥ being greeted by their enormous smiles and earnest embraces… (especially after we have just come from finalizing our 2011 taxes)

These are good days.  Sweet days.  Because they are here & we are together.

Throwing their suitcases in the truck bed, we high-tailed it down the street to The Fish Market… a bustling seafood house…

Given a table alongside giant windows facing the ocean at sundown…

Enjoying views of the spectacular San Diego Bay…
We sat, with large smiles on our faces, endless discussion rolling off the tips of our tongues…

& since sister and Harper also came in that evening from AZ, there was not a chance us girls would call it a night before 12:30am…

P.S.  This is Harper & her Easter basket from Grandpa & Grandma… I was going to post these pics on Easter morning… totally forgot… but, better late than never....

Dad, Mom, Sis & Bro California Dreamin :)

WED
The day was warm and the air smelt of the sea, evocative of a summer holiday…
Clouds danced around the sunshine, blowing in with the breeze…
With dad and mom in California the air taste even sweeter and breathing gets a little bit deeper…
Enjoying this gift of being together… :)

THURS AM
Two of my typical morning components, java and exercise, are much more cheery with my best friend…
With mom by my side…
Chatting endlessly under the warmth of the brilliant morning sun…
Glad for the balmy feel of sunshine on our skin…

THURS PM
After six hours @ Loma Linda (and countless unmentionable memories)…
us girls pull out our June Cleaver aprons…
and the boys macho the BBQ…
Eagerly anticipating the arrival of Mr. & Mrs. Faulker…
Coming together around the table to share wisdom, laugh, let-down, confess, conspire, smile, forgive, relax…
A shared safe place…
“In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the Gospel…” Phil.1:4

FRI AFTERNOON
At the harbor in Marina del Rey…
Unhurried…
Watching boats bobbing rhythmically…
Surveying crabs and jellyfish…
Naming various ship-guarding dogs…
Journeying over to fisherman’s wharf…
A charming spot to look out over the marina…
And gaze out over the channel…
Staring at the blue of the ocean…
Snapping close-ups of pelicans and sea lions…
Perfect for a lazy day…
Till the crumpled sea was streaked with the pink light of the setting sun…

FRI PM
Only in California can it be better to supper out on the patio in January…
We did just that @ C&O’s in Venice Beach
Dining in their relaxed garden setting under a starry sky; strands of twinkling lights strung overhead…
Platefuls of killer garlic rolls, and gargantuan portions of delicious Italian…
Buon Compleanno cara Megan!

SAT
We were busy living in "our picture perfect" days together…
and time flew by much too fast…
Now in San Diego, pulling up to a ginormous cruise ship…
The newbie cruisers excitement is catchy…
Visions of sun, sand and palm trees fill my mind…
Elated for my parents week of “chooky-la-la-ness”
