Matt's Corner

Memorial Day Weekend 2011

We’ve shared the greatest of memories on this beautiful island…

and driving over the Coronado Bridge always brings the fondest of recollections flooding back;

all the treasured times we’ve shared with our favorite Mr. & Mrs. K…

those fantastic years together amidst college… and double-dating… and those newly married days….

we were inseparable, us four…

they are those special kind of friends…

where friendship comes as easy as breathing…

and you become apart of the family, gladly getting to share-in on a few of their great adventures…

J

and so, when I found myself making that familiar left-hand turn onto Orange this past weekend, I couldn’t wait to bear-hug my dearest, sweet friend…

she is like a breath of fresh air…

and every time I read Micah 6:8 I think it describes her…

“And what does the Lord require of you, But to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” - Micah 6:8

she doesn’t know how awesome she truly is…

but I do J

FRI

I’m willing to bet $ that “Buddy” can steal your heart in less than five minutes…

standing all of two-feet-tall, this lil ball of sunshine is all things boy—carting around his favorite trucks, cars, action-figures and as many balls as his little hands can hold— with an affinity for fast and a luv of being tossed “up” to “fly…”

his laughter has this special way of filling up the room…

especially when you agree to “superman…”

spinning yourself round and round, flying him through the sky…

but watch out, because he’ll look up at you and ask, in his most precious voice, “again?”

He had Matt searching for the dramamine…

SAT

we just luv lazy beach house mornings…

enjoying a much slower pace…

and a walk down the street for a delicious cup of Starbucks…

followed by a sit on the front porch…

enjoying the fresh seaside air from a pair of white andirondack chairs…

we also just luv that on the island the boys morph into their alter egos and put on their sous chef hats…

whipping up the most delectable breakfast treats…

while the girls flip through home design catalogues and share in each other’s love of all things home…

we also just luv that this coastal town has two main modes of transportation…

your own two tennies… or two wheels…

a splendid afternoon for busting out the beach cruisers in search of a lil island mojo…

found: @ Maggie Moo’s ice-cream parlor…

mmmmm….toasted coconut ice-cream—hello old friend

that evening our friends introduced us to a new luv…

San Diego’s, Fish Market…

where we procured the best seat in the house…

our own lil corner out over the water…

at that perfect hour between daylight and darkness…

as we watch the sun sink down behind the sea in a welter of liquid gold’s…

Matt leans in and whispers in my ear “I really miss them…”

we just love this extraordinary couple and are so thankful for this blessed gift of a weekend together…

and so, one night easily turned into two… the mere suggestion convincing us to stay a second night

SUN

the early morning rain pounding outside our open window could not dampen our coastal groove…

but we may have indulged in an extra-long lounge in bed…

till the steady drumming turned into a gentle mist...

and finally gave way to the sun…

gradually prompting us from under the covers…

the kitchen slowly filling up, one by one…

till the whole gang’s together…

ready to stuff our bellies full of the boys yummy breakfast

surrounded once again by the best of friends and lots of laughter…

hating that the time has come to say our goodbyes…

but thankful that we are brothers and sisters for eternity…

Once again crossing that blessedly familiar Coronado Bridge…

with the widows open; staring out over the beautiful bay glittering below…

leaving with cheeks sore from grinning from ear-to-ear…

and our hearts oh-so-full…

Daily Tide 5.25 = A Lil Curtain Craze

Originally, Matt was not a fan of curtains…

and Danielle wanted shutters throughout the house…

Till we priced out shutters @ our local Home Depot…

which made us both shudder…

So Matt jumped on the curtain train…

And suffered through Danielle’s million questions each time she brought home a different panel…

and MANY different sets of curtains were brought home…

But white linen beat out all the competition…

especially when I found these babies on the CHEAP @ Ikea for $8 a panel…

making us both very happy campers :)

Sorry about my aperture (camera) issues, above is a different angle of our solution to those top two window inserts…

Daily Tide 5.24 = Functionality

We weren’t making much use of the office wall space opposite our computers…

Note the before pic below…

Boring!!!

So, on a whim, I painted the wall BRIGHT blue…

Now I’m not quite sure that wall belongs in our house, but it’s staying put for now…

Then we added a few bookshelves to bring some functionality to the space…

(By the way, I’ve never liked the bookshelf-look… but Matt was not digging having to dig through our hall cabinets and remove half of their contents to find the book he was looking for…)

Now it’s time to start hunting for just the right pics to fill that open space below the surfboard…

:)

Daily Tide 5.23 = DIY Office Curtains :)

Fabric Sale @ Jo-Ann’s + Danielle =

No sewing machine required; just scissors, iron-on hem tape, and an iron :)

Daily Tide 5.22 = Sunshiney Flare

so maybe the CA weather can't make up it's mind,
but I'm anticipating summer :)
ready to hit the beach and soak up a few lazy days with my love...
is the weather cooperating? um... no...
but inside my house,
it is summer.
setting the Beach Boys greatest hits album to repeat...
adding bits of ribbon and shells to whatever is already laying around...
and looking forward this weekend's warmer forecast...
maybe even a few beach units :)

Daily Tide 5.21 = ♥ Saturdays

When he's home she just stares after him with those puppy-dog-eyes...

Class M1: on adventuring to get our actual M1 motorcycle licenses

Matt rushed home one evening and zoomed down to the Temecula DMV to take his driven motorcycle test before they closed…

First lesson learned: the Temecula DMV doesn’t offer the driven motorcycle test…

Attempt #2; he repeats the same procedure at Hemet…

Second lesson learned: after waiting in line for an hour, the Hemet DMV informs him that you have to make an appointment to take the driven test…

Third time’s a charm…

Right ?!?

Test day rolls around, it starts hailing as he is driving up…

Hailing…

???

But he’s determined to get this over with and takes his two wheels over to the course…

Which is Barbie-sized…

Definitely not made for “real” motorcycles…

And he fails… three times…

The bike won’t make the turns…

But seeing as he was the last appointment of the day, the nice DMV lady says he can practice while she goes on her break…

She comes back for his final try…

Fail…

Ok… one more last chance…

He pushes the motorcycle as far right as it humanly will go then he hangs off the left side in an attempt to make that turn without toppling over…

PASS!!!

Now he has to do it again to complete the second part of the test…

First try -> PASS!!!

One driver down…

So I made an appointment to take my driven test…

And borrowed my friend’s vespa (which is technically classified as a “motor-driven cycle” and is in the same class as a motorcycle) on test day…

The best part was driving it from her house to the Hemet DMV…

A whopping 40 mph in the bike lane all the way down Newport…

45 minutes later, I’m checked in and ready…

And some crazy motorcycle guy is giving me every tip in the book while I wait…

Making me follow him around the course again… and again… and again… till I’m dizzy…

Then I’m up…

Part 1 -> PASS!!!

Part 2 -> oops, can I redo that?

Part 2 redo -> PASS!!!

I cheer on crazy motorcycle guy (who’s on a dirt bike) and he passes…

The guy in line behind him has the exact same bike we do; the same model as the one Matt took the test on…

And I’m pretty sure I caught him smirking at my sweet ride once or twice…

So I decide to stay and see if he can maneuver his bike on the miniature-sized course…

He fails…

I would offer to let you borrow “speedy” here, but you seemed to think you were too good for her…

So “speedy” and I zoomed off to begin our trek home…

M1 paper in hand… J

Daily Tide 5.19 = It's a Like/Dislike Relationship...

houseplants...
I like them...
they dislike me...
here's to working on that green thumb...

this lil guy's been around a couple months.... we just might make it
newbies... not sure how we feel about each other yet...
and i just lurve orchids... i google, utubed, and read up on how to care for em... did everything by the book... but my last 3 were just bent on dying... Matt said "no more $ on orchids baby"... so I bought fake orchid stems and stuck them into the pot that still contained its previous orchids' dead root-system (which actually helps to keep them upright)... :)
here's to just faking it...

Daily Tide 5.18 = ♥ Shadowy Rain Clouds

I ♥ rainy days :)

And remember that front porch project we randomly started back in January??? Matt found his way back to it while I was in AZ (♥ him SO much)... he and a friend poured this baby themselves :) Next up, overlaying it with loads of purdy brick...
Making Matt's first attempt with concrete = a success (no surprise here), but the yard did suffer some minor collateral damage...

Last Week

it was an entire week of heels and mascara…

& running out the door by 8am…

not because I necessarily wanted too…

but because it was my civic duty too…

I was lucky juror #7 for the entirety of this past week…

my front row seat in court (surprisingly) wasn’t actually ALL bad…

time-consuming and redundant -> yes…

but also, with-out-a-doubt, a part of what makes this nation really great…

it was an interesting week:

watching witnesses…

scrutinizing evidence…

evaluating testimonies…

observing the seriousness of the jurors…

listening to lawyers ask the same questions again… and again… and again… and again… and again…

filled with an abundance of breaks and much reading…

completing errands on my “lunch”…

being a part of the deliberation process…

noting the letter of the law (by-the-way, spousal abuse is define as “offensive touching” and “does not have to cause harm or pain”)…

talking the with lawyers post-verdict…

rejoicing that my time on CSI is now officially over and life can go back to normal… J

Arizona Girls Trip ♥

Monday
Fact: Danielle is just a wee bit crazy in ♥ with her am java/tea…
So in preparation for my upcoming “work-cation” in AZ I appropriately texted my lil sis…
Me: “important question: do you have a teapot?”
Sis: “nnnooo”
Me: “a kettle?”
Sis: “I have a coffeemaker; all you need for tea is hot water”
Me: “but it doesn’t get hot enough L” (I did forewarn you… “crazy in ♥” remember)
Me: “no worries, I’ll live”
Me: “but by the way, I think your baby will need one”
Sis: “boil it on the stove dork… DIY! ... lol
Me: “hahahaha, good one sis J

Tuesday
aloha Phx ♥ ♥ ♥
so excited to soak every ounce of precious time with my BFFs…
and for a week of all things girl…
case and point: within the hour of snatching my bags off the plane, sis and I have plopped ourselves poolside,
a pair of chilly ice-teas in hand…
enjoying the glaringly hot sun;
seeing as summer has just begun, it feels simply delightful to soak up those warm, bronzey rays…
while the serene sound of water lightly pattering into the pool plays second fiddle to the noise of our unceasing chatter;
you know how it is with your favorite girlies: never a pause in our ramblings…
& the funness (yes, it’s a rule that I’m allowed to make up words here) of having a shopping buddy; one that actually likes shopping (no offense Matt)…
someone to help you sort through the best lil trinkets…
and fluffy pillows…
and vintagey sea-inspired things…
and ruffley curtains…
and objects made of shells…
♥ ♥ ♥ funness J

Wednesday
today the trifecta of the three musketeers is complete,
MOM’s flip-flops officially landed in AZ!!!
adding sparkles and glitter to our journey of all things girl…
with things like fancy Oregano’s salads… and chick-flicks…
& endless couch units around the CANDY dish (where you get unlimited scoops)…
even our heavy eyelids couldn’t persuade us to bed before 1AM…
I must have told mom THREE times that she “just HAD to let me go to bed…”
have some tides changed or what? lol!

Thursday
an exciting, momentous, beautiful day!!!
we drove to the doctor in eager anticipation…
each placing our bets…
boy???... girl???
squinting our eyes at the blue and white images flashing over a black screen…
listening intently to the beautiful sound of a strong heartbeat…
final guesses everyone…
the moment is here…
on the left corner of the screen white letters pop up one at a time…
G-I-R-L…
followed by lots of oohing and ahhing…
and congratulations...
and BIG smiles…
and a gallon of PINK paint…
4 hours and 2 coats later our newly painted pink slate is ready for tomorrows frills…
and ruffles…
and wallpaper…

Friday
yes, I did say wallpaper…
but first we filled our morning with yummy java…
and anthropology browsing…
and turquoise trinkets…
and billowy curtains…
and flowery linen…
and wallpaper hunting…
which drove us in search of more coffee…
which gave us enough courage to actually wallpaper…
our “team” effort and self-defined roles consisted of:
sis as the “submerger;”
me as the “edger/cutter;”
& mom as the “hanger, smusher, applicator, bubble-getter, & smoother…”
making her our shining MVP…
and the reason that purdy pink damask wallpaper succeeded in bringing another punchy pop of girl to our new favorite place for all things girl…

Saturday
Can I tell you about my mom?
My godly, terrific, wonderful, beautiful, fun, sweet, loving, creative, brilliant mother?
Ok…we would be here forever…
So allow me to give you one quick snapshot of the incredible faith and passionate prayer life of my mom—one insight into the many beautiful faucets of her incredible character…
In high school I was a mess; desperately lost and miserable in my sin. My heart was as brittle and hard as ice… I will spare you more of the ugly details, but I will never forget one morning where a mother’s love chipped away, even if for just a moment, cracked and melted the walls around my steely heart…
Now for a lil background in one long run-on sentence: I was 15 and had no license, but decided to steal my parents car in the middle of the night to go somewhere I shouldn’t have; then was driving home and found myself pulled over because I forgot to turn my headlights on… cops called my parents… parents came and got me…I figured I was already in so much trouble that I should fess up to the multitude of other heinous things I’d been up too… we were up all night… and because my parents didn’t trust me enough to sleep in my own bed I was forced to crash on their floor…
I remember after getting a couple hours of sleep my dad told me to get up because there was something he wanted to show me; down the stairs we went, through the kitchen and he pointed through the sliding glass doors to the patio…
There my mom sat; facing the rising sun, her arms hugged tightly around her knees, tear streaming from her cheeks… it was abundantly clear that she was pouring out her heart to the Savior.
My dad just looked at me and said: “Danielle, I want you to know she is praying for you.”
Why this interlude in the documentation of my recent Arizona trip?
Because my mom and I became best friends!!!!
The next year I was involved in a life-threatening car accident; injured and immobile for so long that just walking down the street was an immense amount of work for me. As part of my rehab, mom and I would go for short walks each day; starting with one street, then two, then three… we worked up till eventually I could walk the entire neighborhood.
And it stuck… even after I had recovered. We got up every morning in the pitch black at 4:45am—school or no school, rain, snow, or shine—to walk our hour-long route together. Walks-with-mom being one of my favorite childhood memories… and I don’t recall many silent moments; I chatted her ear off about everything. She became my closest confidant and best friend.
And she still is today J
Why the second detour?
Because whenever we’re together we pick right back up where we left off… (ok, not at 4:45am) starting our day off together, pounding the pavement side-by-side, chatting about everything under the sun. On one of those recent walks in AZ I recalled this story; her faith, her life of prayer…
And she told me something I never knew before—she told me that it was that morning, after that heart-breaking night, that God revealed his incredible, unfathomable, unchanging love to her in a unique way that she can still hardly put into words…
♥ you mom! Thankful for your prayers on my behalf; thankful for a faithful God who answers prayers J

Sunday
capitalizing on our beautiful week together…
and in celebration of all things girl…
in anticipation of a precious baby girl on her way…
and the excitement of becoming a new mom…
and in honor of our AMAZING mother…
we’ve headed out for an early happy mother’s day celebration…
a beautiful day…
for lunch on the patio…
for relaxing, hot-stone pedicures…
for perfectly polished nails…
for being TOGETHER!!!
for returning again to that pretty pink baby room…
contemplating curtains…
and crystal chandeliers…
added creamy white shelves…
arranging flowers…
creating the perfect baby mobile…
making over tables…
sprinkling accents here and there…
smiling at the progress…
thankful for this sweet indulgence of celebrating together…

Monday
after good-byeing with mom…
with time to kill before I, too, was to be off…
while waiting for shops to open their doors,
we decided it in our best interest to visit the sensei of coffee drinks;
(drumroll) the Coffee Bean!
finding our little corner of the sunshiney patio,
just the sister & I…
reminding each other:
to keep the most important, the most important…
to keep the main thing, the main thing…
summarized in two words (though, for us, it was stated in many):
LOVE Christ!!!
then those shops opened up,
& I filled my carry-on to overflowing,
sure that there was no way security was going to let me through with my new floor lamp…
but it was a $10 steal and I had just the place for it back in Cali…
despite the fact that I had already filled up and checked the extra two bags I borrowed from sister…
so yes, I looked crazy…
and security did laugh…
as did my husband when I texted him “baby, would you mind parking the car at the airport when you pick me up… I think I may need some help with my extra baggage”
J
